About Us
The Problem
India's cities lack waste management, implementation of environmental policies is poor, children die due to lack of access to clean water & sanitation, air pollution is reducing the quality of life day by day. At the same time, the last few years have seen dazzling progress in technology, and today, India has world’s third largest internet user base. This begets the question of how we can leverage this technology to solve our environmental crisis and thereby improving community health?
The Solution
Using ICT tools, Ecomap India aims to identify local environmental issues across India by empowering people locally with information about local legislation and environment. Two, by identifying and showcasing community initiatives, we will connect communities with each other and inspire change. The democratization of information will raise the bar for urban governance and give power directly to the people.
Mission
EcoMap India an online platform that seeks to make citizens active stakeholders to tackle local environmental issues. We believe that acting locally and thinking globally is the way for a sustainable tomorrow and not vice-versa.
The Method
Through a mapping platform, people can report local environmental issues such as waste disposal, water contamination, air pollution etc. At the same time, pro-environment community initiatives can also be pinned on the Eco Map platform.
Ecomap India works in the following ways:
1. We are not only pining the issues but also positive community initiatives taken to solve or at least find an answer to local issues. This way, we are connecting the dot for one community to learn from other changemaker community and find support and learn from them on solving those issues.
2. The longer term vision is to obtain sufficient data and information about local ecohazards or environmental issues across the country. So, on a single platform we will be able to identify the specific issues facing communities nationally. This would also help bring states together on a common thread and that would in turn, push towards a more accountable government.
3. When people participate, they become pro-active citizens and we identify the eco-conscious individuals. They become the points which take the idea forward. They learn about the environment as well as laws which are very critical to making a difference and presently, remain unreachable to citizens.
